Mortal Engines (#1 Mortal Engines Quartet)

Author(s): Philip Reeve

Fantasy, Magic and Science Fiction | Staff Picks - Misha

Mortal Engines launched Philip Reeve's brilliantly imagined creation, the world of the Traction Era, where mobile cities fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic future. The first instalment introduces young apprentice Tom Natsworthy and the murderous Hester Shaw, flung from the fast-moving city of London into heart-stopping adventures in the wastelands of the Great Hunting Ground.

I started reading it for the interesting setting and its assortment of moving cities, and I stayed for its fantastic cast of seriously flawed characters. Just everything about this series is worth gushing about, I've still yet to find another series whose action scenes are as satisfying or interesting, and the books expertly balance the grimness of the setting with a good sense of humour too.
