Dorothy Butler (1925 - 2015)
Dorothy Butler was a pioneering expert on children's literacy and reading. She wrote many books for children as well as books about the importance of reading for children. 'Babies Need Books' and 'Reading Begins at Home' were two very popular titles. She started her first bookshop in her family's house on the North Shore. In 1972 the business moved into a shop and then in 1985 moved again to Jervois Road in Ponsonby where it has been ever since! Somehow, she and her husband Roy also managed to bring up eight children.
Her beloved house at Karekare was sold after her death in 2015 and Eden Arts now offers residencies for artists at the lovely old homestead.
Unfortunately, all of Dorothy Butler's books are now out of print.
